I recently wrote a guest blogger post for the Main Street Vegan blog on starting and growing a Meetup® group. For those of you not familiar with Meetup, it’s a website designed to bring people with common interests together. My own vegan Meetup group has been wonderful. We’ve shared fun (and food!), made new friends and are available to support one another.
While writing my post for Main Street Vegan, I did a little websurfing which led to finding some interesting groups I thought I’d share here. There truly is a Meetup for everyone!
For instance, did you know in Houston Texas there is a meetup group called Houston Naked Male Bonding? No sex just a bunch of guys sitting around in the nude. Of course not all Houston residents are jazzed about so much exposure so maybe you’d like to check out the Houston Shyness and Social Anxiety Group on which one wary potential member posted, “I’m too shy to even meet with people from this group.” Fail.
Are you a lesbian who loves to play Scrabble and happens to live in NYC? You’re in good company with 143 other Scrabble playing lesbians!
If you like to cuddle strangers and live in Chicago there’s a Meetup for you too. The Truthful Touch Cuddle party is run by a “certified Cuddle Party facilitator” so you’re in good hands. Literally.
There are five major cities in the world who have Meetups for Freegans. Don’t know what a freegan is? According to their website:
Freegans are people who employ alternative strategies for living based on limited participation in the conventional economy and minimal consumption of resources. Freegans embrace community, generosity, social concern, freedom, cooperation, and sharing in opposition to a society based on materialism, moral apathy, competition, conformity, and greed.
In a nutshell (pun intended), they liberate items including food from dumpsters. And they have a website. Good for them!
To keep with the vegan theme, I will direct you to the blog post I mentioned earlier and tell you that a great way to meet other vegans or if you’re simply curious about becoming vegan is to look for a Meetup near you. Just make sure you write vegan in the search box and not freegan or your next potluck may include items of an uncertain origin.
